Mostly it's difficult to completely describe, but people just want to spend time in the new area, whether at the bar of the outdoor kitchen, warming near the firepit, reading on a shady patio, or catching the breeze on covered porch. When a space becomes a large part of the homeowners' life, that's when a project has been completed with excellence RELAXING: For a space to be relaxing, it must feel easy. The space must feel connected to a home and like it flows from the adjoining room inside the home out. When accomplished correctly, the patio outdoor living area feels like an extension of the home, or simply another "room" of the home. FIRE: Warmth. Whether a built-in masonry firepit, contemporary, down-sized gas fireplace, or large, rustic hearth, fire adds warmth to any patio, deck or outdoor living area. In Kansas City, patios and decks can be 3-season affairs at best. Fire can extend the season of an outdoor living area. WATER: It's not just the sight of water and the bouldering and lush plants that appeal to us. It's also the soothing sounds. From a trickle, to a gurgle, or a roar, water can add a great dynamic to an outdoor living space. LIGHTING: With proper lighting, an outdoor living area stays connected with the home. During summer, most patios and decks are used in the evening, so it's important to have good lighting. Berry OLC designs lighting that is accent lighting and not "boulevard" lighting. Too much lighting can be worse than not enough. The goal is to create atmosphere and enhance a space, not overwhelm it. |
