CLEAN INSTALLS: In Kansas City patio landscaping around all living areas such as outdoor kitchens, fire pit, outdoor grills, outdoor fireplaces, outdoor bar, whether they are surfaced using paver patios, stamped concrete patios, acid stained concrete patios or even driveways, decks or covered porches, there is a clear trend toward a cleaner, more defined look. It may be influenced by a more modern era viewpoint. This does not mean contemporary per se, but just relevant to our time and not stuck in designs common 20 years ago. So, Berry OLC has moved a lot of the patio design and landscape design in that direction. Another kansas city landscape designer might not think the same way. However, in our circle of clients, in large and small jobs, we've seen a definite shift toward cleaner, artisan-crafted backyards around a central living area such as a patio, pool and spa landscaping area, a paver patio or deck, fire pit, outdoor grills, outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, outdoor bar,or covered porch. One common factor in our projects is when there is an existing concrete patio.  Many backyard patios and driveways have an existing concrete patio surface. Rather than encourage people to tear out the concrete patio, acid stained concrete, driveway or pool deck, and in so doing, create an enormous mess and drag a patio project out, we often recommend renovating the old concrete patio or driveway by creating an outdoor patio design with a concrete overlay or driveway pavers. We use concrete resurfacing outdoor tile to rehab the existing concrete patio or outdoor flooring. Concrete restoration with a patio concrete coating, such as outdoor tile paving stone, or patio pavers, driveway pavers or flagstone works most of the time as long as the surface is not structurally damaged. This can preserve a significant portion of a budget.  We feel the shift toward a clean backyard landscaping design in Kansas City landscaping and our use of the concrete overlay outdoor tile results in a cleaner install as well as a more defined, less-cluttered look.

Berry OLC's work usually revolves around a backyard landscape design with an outdoor living area like a custom fire pit, outdoor kitchen, patio, deck or covered porch.  Or, in the case of an existing concrete surface, our scope often includes a concrete restoration project or concrete resurfacing with a tile overlay over a concrete patio, or acid stained concrete resurfacing with patio pavers or outdoor tile. The outdoor tile we use can also cover a concrete floor coating.  It makes an excellent outdoor flooring and concrete overlay and pool deck overlay as well. pool landscaping. Sometimes these projects include a fire feature or water feature, and sometimes it's necessary to install retaining or sitting walls. Oftentimes, though it's just beautifying a tired plant, tree and shrub scheme or adding arbors, benches and fence. Many customers have chosen to install landscape lighting with their newer landscaping. Landscape lighting with the up-to-date fixtures we use really brings a home in our modern day and age. Some lighting out there is 30 or 40 or more years old. Having a new landscape lighting system installed with a new landscape project can make a home instantly seem 30 years younger on the outside, which then translates into making a home feeling warmer, fresher, and more relaxed. One of these projects was the site for a wedding with more than 300 people, 3 caterers, 7 tents, a poolside dance on a patio deck we had constructed, a band and many, many small groups of people mingling and talking in the various seating areas we built. It was at night and it was lit primarily with our landscape lighting system. It was one of the most fun parties my wife and I had ever attended.  The key to a successful project is marrying the outside of the home with the inside.  The patio or outdoor living space should feel like an extension of the home.

CONCRETE RESTORATION: A concrete patio , acid stained concrete, concrete driveway, or pool deck can be an eye sore.  However, old concrete can benefit from a solid outdoor patio design, driveway pavers system, or pool deck patio design involving pool deck concrete restoration. This is performed using a concrete coating, concrete overlay, or concrete resurfacing with outdoor tile. A concrete patio, acid stained concrete, driveway or pool deck can also be enhanced using outdoor flooring ranging from outdoor tile to patio pavers, to flagstone, paving stone, or brick pavers. The benefit to using the concrete overlay system to surface the concrete patio flooring, driveway, or pool deck can save a large part of the overall patio or pool deck budget considering just the tear out on an old concrete patio flooring can cost $3.50 per square foot plus the torn up yard and mess.  A concrete coating with outdoor tile driveway pavers or other outdoor flooring with patio pavers installs fast and leaves less mess. Concrete resurfacing cannot usually be performed when the existing concrete patio or acid stained concrete is spalling or if it has settled significantly in various areas. If the existing concrete patio flooring or driveway has a few minor cracks or minor settling, a concrete overlay or concrete coating with outdoor tile, outdoor flooring patio pavers or paver patio flooring can be used the majority of the time if the settling can be supported with piers.   (click here to see concrete restoration photos)
